For some 18 years now, 55-year-old Ian Brierley has been selling Guyana in photographic splendor. The freelance photographer was first introduced to our piece of paradise by a Guyanese businessman he met in Yorkshire, England so long ago.
Brierley was ‘grabbed by the land of many waters’ and has been teaching the
rest of the world about Guyana. He takes photos of Guyanese life and exhibits them in his homeland. These are mounted with those of several other countries the photographer tours.
He considers himself a “freelance, adventure entrepreneur”. Additionally, Brierley has taken the popular “crabwood oil” and is distributing it to the world for its various purposes.
Ian, who hails from Manchester, said that he recently exhibited Guyana at the Caribbean Cultural Centre in England for the country’s Independence Day celebrations. Over 10,000 photos have been gathered of Guyana, and while they come in photographic form, Brierley also creates paintings which are of interest to many persons outside of Guyana.
Brierley said that he and a friend were invited to the South American nation several years ago and saw that it was different from what he is usually accustomed to. “To me it was an undiscovered country. In England no one had heard of Guyana. We have heard of Ghana, but when we say Guyana no one has heard of Guyana. So I went to Ghana and one week later I was in Guyana; a great contrast.”
He added that several persons within the tourism sector would have aided in his travels and introductions to the people who would have been the subject of his work. The photographer said he recently acquired an underwater camera and is eager to start his discovery of the world beneath. (Zena Henry)
