The Eye Clinic at the Linden Hospital Complex recently commenced offering cataract surgery. After a year of waiting, residents of Linden requiring cataract surgery could now access this service owing to the appointment of Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Rameeza McDonald.
According to the clinic on Thursday, Eye Care Guyana/ Caribbean Council for the Blind (CCB) has been instrumental in providing equipment including operating microscope to carry out the delicate microsurgical procedure to remove cataracts and a new autoclave.
These pieces of equipment allowed the commencement of the first surgical list on November 8.
With help of visiting Ophthalmologist Dr. Chad Rostron (from London, UK), Dr. McDonald was able to execute 15 cataract procedures within 10 days. This has helped to start clearing the backlog of patients requiring treatment.
The release stated that to help with difficult cases, the surgeons needed a small microsurgical instrument. Thankfully, a local goldsmith, Francois Costello, fabricated the small device for them.
According to the release, surgical management will also be enhanced through the donation of a Keratometer- a diagnostic instrument, which will enable more accurate optical outcomes after cataract surgery.
This equipment has been donated to Dr. McDonald by Jesus in Action Charity. “So far, the results of the surgery are looking excellent, and visiting ophthalmologist,” Dr. Chad Rostron said.
He added, “I am so glad to see the cataract service at last up and running in Linden. I have been very impressed with Dr. McDonald’s ophthalmic surgical skills, and am delighted that Linden has such a highly trained and competent ophthalmologist to serve their needs.”
