The Alliance For Change (AFC) has indicated that it will be playing its part in the fight to secure a better pay packet for those who work at public entities.
The announcement by Government that it will be granting a five per cent increase to the wages and salaries of public servants has not been well received.
Public servants have more than just stated their dissatisfaction but moved bravely to register that dissatisfaction through protest demonstrations. And even though the government has been ignoring it, the protest continues.
AFC leader Khemraj Ramjattan told the media that the AFC plans to “do what politicians do, lobby for better.’’
He said, too, that his party members will be on the picket lines to support those who are brave enough to stand up for what they deserve.
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) soon after the increase was announced has noted its disappointment. Party leader, David Granger had told the media that the increase is meaningless.
But the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Government seems to be oblivious to the challenges facing Guyanese as the administration maintains that what was given is enough.
Minster of Public Services, Jennifer Westford, even told Kaieteur News that “public servants should be happy with what they were given.”
PPP General Secretary and Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee supports Westford’s comments and shot down any chance of the government reducing staggered increase.
The term staggered increase is used in the context of having a higher percentage increase given to those at the bottom and less to those who already have a big pay packet.
