– Expected to churn out best performing students in Region Five
With the input of over $45 Million from Government and the Ministry of Education, Region Five now boasts its second A-List secondary school, thereby improving the quality of education available to students of that region.
After months of upgrading its infrastructure, learning materials and curriculum, the previously B-Listed secondary school is now in a position to offer subjects and facilities parallel to the top secondary schools
in the country.
During the commissioning of the school on Tuesday, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand explained that Region Five never had an A-List school. As a result, students who performed at A-List level had to be sent to schools out of the region, particularly in Regions Four or Six, to a school that matched their abilities.
This situation, the Minister said, was deemed unfair to both parents and children, and as such the Ministry aspired to bring about change. Two secondary schools- Bygeval and Rosignol – were identified at the two extremes of the Region, to be upgraded.
Included in the works to bring Bygeval to A-List status, were the refurbishment of the all science labs (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). The Minister said that they are all now properly equipped with furniture, equipment and chemicals. The same can be said of the Home Economics lab, which was also refurbished and outfitted with furniture, equipment and other materials.
As for the Information Technology lab, 15 new computers were added and servicing was done to the other computers, bringing the total number of computers in the lab to 30. “This means that every child in the class can access his or her own unit when using the lab,” the Minister said.
Additionally, rehabilitative works were conducted in the Industrial Technology lab, equipping it with the adequate tools and other supplies, while electricity has been restored to its host room. The Library, Agricultural Science and Allied Arts departments were also recipients of added resources.
Further, with new subjects being added to the curriculum, the Ministry was mandated to assign adequate staff to address each subject area. It was noted that 24 subjects, covering each stream at CSEC level, will be offered at the now A-List school. The current staff is made up of a total of 38 teachers, including 12 trained graduates, two untrained graduates, 14 trained teachers and 10 untrained teachers.
Textbooks were also allotted to cover most of the subject areas in every grade, “even more than other A-List schools”, according to the Minister.
It is now anticipated that Bygeval secondary will bring about the best academic and extra-curricular performances in students as did the Abram Zuil and Anna Regina Secondary Schools, which produced the top performing CSEC students in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
