The clearing and de-silting of several outfalls around the city is being facilitated by the Ministry of Public Works in collaboration with the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).
M&CC’s Chief Engineer, Colvern Venture says that the cleared areas will better assist the drainage system in Georgetown during periods of heavy rainfall.
“The Mayor and City Council had requested the assistance of the Ministry of Public Works to clear the outfall, but this was not forthcoming until now. For the past few days, we have been working, hand in hand to ensure that the areas are cleared to facilitate better drainage. We are currently working on clearing critical areas around town.”
Ongoing works include maintenance to the Ruimveldt and Sussex Street kokers in Charlestown.
When Kaieteur News visited the two kokers, yesterday de-silting works were already completed, but the “cleared” water outlet at Ruimveldt brought to light decay to parts of the koker.
“What happened is that because the area was de-silted the increased pressure of the tide may have caused that heavy leaking at the koker, we are not sure if while dredging the area, the machinery may have caused the damage to the koker door but we have never noticed that kind of leaking before… however we have already built a door to replace it, which should be installed soon,” Venture added.
In addition, the City Engineer revealed that de-silting of the main canals around Georgetown is underway.
“We are currently clearing the Church Street canal… hopefully we will be able to clear the critical areas such as the canal at Avenue of the Republic once the equipment is available to remove the mud and slush…We have been able to clear the Church Street canal because we can leave the debris on the Merriman’s Mall, however at certain parts of the city this is not possible. We need the trucks to remove the waste.”
At a recent press conference, Mayor Hamilton Green noted that efforts were made by the council to acquire additional trucks to conduct such work.
“We had made recommendations to have additional trucks readily available to the council so that works can be completed, but our proposals were ignored by the Town Clerk (Ag). In fact she has refused to sign the cheques that were presented to her for this reason.’
Kaieteur News understands that several MCC trucks are in need of repairs, but recommendations had been made by the council for the equipment to be sold for the purchase of a new fleet. (Rehanna Ramsay)
