A market thief was caught red-handed on Sunday by officers of the City Constabulary Unit, who were conducting a routine security check at the Stabroek Market.
Two grocery stalls were reportedly broken into around 5:40 hours on Sunday morning. The suspect is said to have ransacked the stands but stallholders confirmed minimal losses.
According to Assistant Superintendent of the City Constabulary Department, Gordon Langevine, the suspect was found hiding between two stalls in the market.
The man was later identified as Anil Rameswhar of Diamond Housing Scheme.
“He was subsequently arrested by ranks of the anti crime unit within the constabulary. His explanation was that he fell asleep in the market,” Langevine said.
He explained that two stalls located at section A of the Stabroek Market had been burglarized by the thief.
“Ranks went to conduct a routine check at the market on Sunday and we observed a man heading west along the butchers’ passage.
“I gave the instruction to block the entrances and ranks conducted a search. They found a male suspect hiding between two stalls.”
Rameshwar is expected to appear before a Magistrate today.
Mr. Langevine says that during the Christmas season, vendors and stallholders are asked to be on their guard for thieves and burglars.
Several stalls had been burglarized at the Stabroek Market earlier this year and thieves carted off millions of dollars worth of jewelry and other merchandise.
As such a new strategy has been implemented by the crime fighting unit to combat the upsurge of breakages at the Stabroek Market area.
