A 37-year-old fisherman was yesterday jailed for three years after he pleaded guilty to the charge of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.
Dwayne Marshall appeared before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennon at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was told that coupled with his sentence; he will also pay a fine of $129,000 for being in possession of 6.2 grams of cocaine.
On November 11, Marshall was apprehended at Lombard and Princes streets by police on mobile patrol who noticed him behaving in what was described as a “suspicious manner.”
Marshall reportedly granted the police permission to search him which resulted in them finding a parcel which contained “54 creamish rock-like substances” suspected to be cocaine.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that when confronted, the fisherman admitted that he purchased the substance from a “man in Essequibo” for the purpose of smoking.
At the hearing, the man asked for leniency since he did not want to waste the court’s time. In response, the Magistrate calculated the street value of the substance and handed down his sentence.
