Lewis says outstanding athletes will be rewarded
By Zaheer Mohamed
Godfrey Alexander of District 9 Rupununi grabbed gold in the male over 41 teachers Discuss event at the recently concluded National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field championships which were held at the National Stadium. Alexander, who set a new record of 32.61 meters, thus erasing the old record of 29.94, told Kaieteur Sport recently that he is pleased with his performance. “I trained very hard to achieve this feat, I am upbeat about it and I must thank the almighty for making it possible,” he added.
Meanwhile Chairman of the Region 9 Athletics Club, Kenrick Lewis told this publication on Saturday that he is pleased with the region’s athletes’ performance at the championships adding that plans are in the making to reward them. Rupununi captured 14 gold medals; among them are Beverley Ignacio who won the Girls 10km road race, Aleah Chapman in the Girls U-12 high jump, Fabio Phillips in the Boys U-10 high jump, Dereck Mentis in the long jump Boys U-10 and Selweis Kyce in the 1000m boys U-8.
Lewis, who hails from Wakenaam, informed that the club will look into the future training of the athletes. “On behalf on the region 9 athletics club, I would like to congratulate them on their achievement and we will try our best to ensure that they continue training for future competitions. We are also looking forward to working closely with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG),” he said.
Lewis, who is a Physiotherapist, indicated that they are planning to hold two competitions in 2014. “We are hoping to hold our first competition in 2014 during the rodeo season and another during the August vacation. We are also encouraging athletes from Georgetown and elsewhere to participate,” he added.
He pointed out that the region has talent, but they need more exposure and the media can play a vital role in their development. “Due to the geographical location of the region traveling long distances has become a norm for athletes, so that is one of the major reasons they are so good at the longer distances, it is something that has become natural for them,” added Lewis.
The chairman stated that they hope to capture the overall national schools championships title within the next two years and they have received some support from Director of Sports Neil Kumar. He said that the residents of the area also support the athletes. “Due to their love for the sport the residents would support the athletes from time to time and we are happy about that,” said Lewis.
Lewis informed that Samuel Kaitan was injured and did not perform to his best at the championships. He said that the Athletics club will ensure that he receive medical attention shortly. Kaitan recently won the Suriname Marathon and also represented Guyana at the Carifta games.
The club would like to thank Joyce Lawrence, Sugrim Singh, Kumar, Molgraven Mining Company, Region 9 Administration, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and other miners for their support.
