Former Senior Chess Champion, Wendell Meusa, turned in a masterful performance to defeat his successor, Taffin Khan, amassed an impeccable 3 points and stayed on course to reclaim the top accolade when action on day two of the 2013 National Senior Chess Championships concluded at the Ocean Spray Hotel, Rupert Craig Highway and Stanley Place Kitty, yesterday afternoon.
Khan’s chances of retaining the title suffered a further setback when he was held to a draw by former National Junior Champion, Anthony Drayton, but he rebounded with a win over Rashad Hussain to finish the second day on 1 ½ points, the same as Anthony Drayton. Glenford Corlette and Errol Tiwari are on two points apiece, but the former player ended in the second place by dint of the tie break system.
Even from the onset, the pundits were adamant that the Khan/Meusa clash could have decided the champion. That slot is not yet guaranteed, however, as there are still 4 more rounds to be contested. However, with the present points standing, it would take more than a herculean effort for Khan to retain the crown.
Meusa played white and started the game aggressively, sacrificing a rook for Khan’s knight and bishop; Meusa later explained that the move was tantamount to sacrificing one soldier for two. The strategy restricted Khan from attacking or counters and afforded Meusa a slight advantage. The eventual winner imperceptibly piled on the pressure, slowly building his attack while Khan desperately attempted to extricate himself from the trap. He eventually decided that it useless and threw in his hand. The game lasted for all of three hours and fifteen minutes but Meusa opined that this should not have been the case but Khan demonstrated the fighting spirit of a true champion and tried his best to turn the game around, albeit unsuccessfully.
There are still four more games to be contested and Meusa said his toughest challenge is past and while he feels confident of clinching the accolade, he will not get cocky or complacent. The players return for the 4th and 5th rounds on Wednesday and Saturday respectively, while the final two rounds will be played next Sunday, all at the same venue. (Michael Benjamin)
