Dear Editor,
I would like to bring to attention some worrying incidents that happened at the Bartica Magistrate Courtroom on Wednesday 27th November, 2013.
During one of the recessions of the Honourable Magistrate whose name I cannot remember, two of the prisoners who are being charged for murder, left the bench that is allotted to the prisoners and went to the relatives seated with the other folks attending court to have conversations. This was done in the presence of the Police Officers seated in the courtroom.
One policeman was asked about this behavior by a woman in the courtroom and he looked at her and mumbled something under his breath and turned and walked away. It seems to the others there that these people are above the law and they can do anything they feel.
Secondly, The behavior of the Police Prosecutor is very unbecoming as a senior officer towards his ranks and the member of the public.
Let me deal with his junior ranks first. Two detectives made some grammatical mistakes on their case dockets: before he called them quietly and point out the mistakes, in a loud tone he told them “to learn to spell and write proper English” and he did this with a grin on his face. Mind you, when he is prosecuting his grammar is atrocious.
I was appalled at his behavior to a woman who I later learnt to be the mother of the deceased, for whose murder the men I mentioned before, are charged.
This woman left the courtroom to answer her phone. Whilst she was there standing by the steps, the accusers were leaving the courtroom. As they stepped through the door one of them shouted that the woman wants to take out their photographs. The prosecutor left in a haste and started to shout at the confused woman, who told him that she was not taking pictures. He continued in his loud tone to chase her but she stood her ground. He then told her she has no right to be in the courtyard.
Mr. Editor, if the woman has no right there I want to ask if the relatives of the accusers have the right to be there. I want to know if it because she is poor and they are rich that they have preference than her. They were accused of murdering her son and they have more right than her.
The sergeant was not content that the woman did not leave he went further to call a woman officer and told her to put the woman out.
Mr. Editor, I would like to know these officers have a motto to “To Serve and To Protect.”
I hope that these matters can be investigated and some measures are being put in places so that they would not have a re occurrences.
Mr. Commissioner please does something to curb this behavior of your some of your officers.
