In the aftermath of Thursday’s fire that destroyed Comfort Sleep, workers have been reminiscing and inspecting what remained of the building.
One of the persons on site was Danny Narine, the factory supervisor/foreman who has been with Comfort Sleep for over ten years. He said that it was his firm belief that the fire was the work of an arsonist since two fires in less than a month cannot be coincidental.
He said that he believes that the two bonds which were burnt in October might be the work of an arsonist, too.
Narine said that he is not sure who would want to burn them out of business and that as far as he knows his boss has no enemies. He did say, however, that since his boss was featured in the newspaper, saying that his business has grown; the next day the bond was on fire. Now the factory with everything inside has been completely burnt.
“Since I have been here with this company we never had a mishap, with electrical or anything, so it’s amazing to know that every time we leave then something happens.” Since the first fire, extra precautionary measures were taken to eliminate any avenues that could possible pose a fire threat.
“Where the foam is concerned we don’t have any electrical things around them” said Narine.
According to Narine the mixture of the two chemicals required to make the foam cannot lead to a fire even if the concentrations are not mixed effectively. He did say that the chemicals are fire accelerants but once they are not ignited they cannot start a fire regardless of how long the two chemicals are combined.
The foreman spoke highly of his employer, saying that even though they were going through a financial setback with the losses suffered from their bonds, they were preparing packages and hampers for children for a Christmas party the company would host.
The fire apparently started on the top floor of the Eccles building where all the mattresses were stored. From there it spread and quickly engulfed the building, burning everything inside.
The Guyana Fire Service was on the scene conducting their investigations to determine the cause of fire as well as to respond to the smoke that was emanating from the burnt rubble within certain sections of the building.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said that investigations are currently underway; he said that it’s too early to ascertain the cause of the fire.
The plant supervisor, speaking of the way forward, said that management is looking to see how soon it can re-establish the business.
“We have a good relationship with the bank and our suppliers, and I think they will help us. When our suppliers heard what happened to the bonds we had supplies shipped the next week without worrying about financing because they know that my Boss will ensure they are paid,” he elaborated.
He said that when their bonds were burnt a month ago and financing slowed, his boss ensured that all the employees got paid by taking a loan. “And even though we were recovering, the boss was making plans to ensure that his employees get something for Christmas,” said Narine.
