A taxi driver is counting his lucky stars and those of his passengers. He stated that God must have been with him when he miraculously escaped the clutches of three bandits who ambushed him as he was on his way from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
Taxi driver, Satram Bharat, of Number 7 Village, West Coast Berbice, recounted his near death experience to Kaieteur News.
Mr Bharat said that he left the airport around 22:00 hrs after picking up two passengers, a businessman and his wife who were headed to Skeldon on the Upper Corentyne Coast. Kaieteur News understands that the passengers were Bharat’s cousin and the cousin’s wife, who had just come in from Miami.
Bharat was driving his recently purchased Premio car PRR 9239. He stated that it was raining heavily so he took some time to drive.
In the vicinity of Mahaica he noticed a light constantly behind him. The vehicle pulled up alongside him about twice, but did not pass.
In the vicinity of Cottage, Mahaicony, by the big tree, the vehicle, a car with three passengers, suddenly over took them and spun across the road blocking their path.
Bharat stated that he froze when he saw one of the passengers of the vehicle disembark with gun drawn.
He quickly decided to reverse his car as the gun man opened fire hitting the car three times. Two bullets pierced the windscreen and somehow missed him.
The gunman kept running behind them and started pounding at the door with the gun until Bharat was able to turn the car around and head in the direction of the Mahaica Police station. The bandits gave chase with their vehicle.
After a while Bharat was able to outmaneuver the bandits and head to the Mahaica police station.
At the station his ordeal had just began. The gate was tightly shut and he had to call before a “policeman peeped out and told them to open the gate and come in.”
He expressed disappointment at the treatment he received at the station. He said that he did not receive any help from the police. There were only two police officers at the station.
Although he shouted and told the police what happened, he had to ascend the steps to relate his story. The police rank never came out to inspect the car which had a bullet lodged in the dash board.
There was no patrol available and no help was offered.
He and his two passengers had to remain in the car until about 06:00 hrs.
When he tried to leave around 03:30 hrs he was told that he could not leave until day clean when the detective arrived.
Around 06:00 hrs a detective arrived and accompanied them back to the scene where they found a warhead which the police believe came from a 9mm rifle.
The insurance company also refused to cover the cost of the repairs of his car.
