President of the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) Lennie Shuffler has described the just concluded Second International Invitational Club Festival as a success.
The GVF partnered with the three locals clubs, Port Mourant Training centre, Young Achievers and the Guyana Defence Force to host the festival at the National Gymnasium.
Emerging as the top male team was Trinidad and Tobago’s Big Sepos who downed Suriname’s Yelyco in a pulsating finale. The female Goodwill series between Yelyco and Guyana’s Vanguards saw the Suriname based club defeating the Guyanese 3-0.
This festival formed part of the federations Bloc Development Plan designed to promote increased activity among neighbouring countries at an affordable cost, and to provide international exposure for Guyanese players.
President Shuffler did some in depth reflecting on the festival with Kaieteur News’ Franklin Wilson.
KN – How would you describe the tournament in terms of success or failure?
LS – The festival can be considered a success since most of our objectives were met. It provided our local players the opportunity to be exposed to international competition and to measure our standard of play. Our coaches, referees, linesmen and scorers gained valuable experience with the sharing of knowledge from our visiting teams. With limited finances our festival organisers did wonders with good creative thinking and good cooperation.
KN – Is the executive of the GVF satisfied with the tournament?
LS – GVF was satisfied with the level of play seen at the festival, the good sportsmanship seen, the cooperation given by participating clubs and the on time delivery and quality of meals by Brittany Hotel. There is of course always room for improvement and we will be looking at those areas early as we prepare for next year’s festival.
KN – You did say that hoisting was a partnership with the three locals clubs, how did it work out?
LS – Partnership with clubs worked very well since they all honored their financial obligations so that all expenses for festival could have been cleared. They all benefited from the exposure to what happens in planning a festival at this level.
KN – What was the feedback garnered from the visiting clubs in relation to the competition?
LS – Visiting teams were high in their praise for the level of treatment received, the quality of accommodation, meals and transportation arrangements made. The high level of competition at the festival was also noted by them.
KN – How did corporate Guyana respond?
Female volleyball development to take centre stage in 2014! Members of Yelyco and Vanguard Volleyball Clubs after the presentation.
LS – Since we wanted to produce an exciting product for corporate bodies to buy into we did not approach many corporate sponsors but the few we contacted readily supported; Digicel, Beharry Automotive, John Fernandes and Toucan Industries. With participating clubs support we will
meet our obligations.
KN – The Goodwill series involving Yelyco and the recently formed Vanguard, how did it go and what are the plans of the GVF for the development of the female game?
LS – The series served its purpose as it provided our females with quality exposure and at the same time they were able to establish friendship with a neighboring club for exchange visits. Vanguard will work closely with the Demerara Volleyball Association and GVF in promoting female volleyball.
Areas already targeted are the Guyana School of Agriculture, Kuru Kururu College, Buxton Youth Developers and some schools.
KN – Fan support was not the best, how would the GVF tackle this challenge with a view to getting spectators to come out?
LS – We plan to bring again the Brazilian team from Roraima State and to encourage the large inflow of Brazilians living here to come out. Better marketing and some innovative ideas to bring out people to volleyball including the festival are on the cards.
