Cabinet has instructed that supplementary provisions be sought to meet the necessary expenditure of paying sweeper/cleaners attached to the Ministry of Education. This payment would be retroactive to July 2013, the date of promulgation of the new minimum wages order.
Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon made this announcement during his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at the Office of the President on Friday.
Dr. Luncheon said as Government continues to monitor the implementation of the new minimum wage order, sweeper/ cleaners in the education system came under Cabinet’s scrutiny. He said the Ministry of Education identified a number of areas that complicated the implementation of the new minimum wage order for this category of service providers.
These included uneven employment placement practices in the various Regions uneven remuneration; and late payments.
According to Dr. Luncheon, even though the payments were being made they were not consistent with the recently promulgated minimum wage provision.
“Cabinet considered those among other complications and after examination of the matter, Cabinet concluded that there would be an equitable distribution to schools in the Administrative Regions; equitable distribution of services in the 11 school districts,” he added
Dr. Luncheon said whether on full-time or part-time employment, the remuneration of all sweeper cleaners would now be consistent with the provisions in the minimum wages order 2013.
