With the inclement weather showing signs of stepping in, Berbice remains fairly dry. There will be no other place to be today Sunday, 1st December, but the Albion Community Centre. The occasion is the 14th annual Balram Shane challenge Fund raising 50 overs cricket match between archrivals and two of Guyana’s top teams, Albion Community and the Port Mourant Cricket Club and the third annual Senior Inter club Volleyball competition at the Albion hard court.
The cricket match and volleyball competitions are being sponsored by popular Businessman, community activist and sports enthusiast, Deonarine Balram of the Balram Shane General Store at Rose Hall Town Corentyne.
Both teams are strong and will boost a number of national and former national senior and youth players, while the volleyball competition will see the best teams in Berbice spiking it out for top honours and a bumper crowd is expected to be on hand and a close encounter is envisaged.
A close and exhilarating match is anticipated as is the case whenever the two above named cricket teams tangle. Both teams have named their squads, with several new faces from both sides crossing the floor.
The Albion line up will include West Indies players Sewnarine Chattergoon, and Devendra Bishoo, national players Anthony Bramble and Jonathan Foo, with the rest of the lineup reading Kandasammy Surujnarine, Veerapen Permaul, Balchand Baldeo, Avenash Wajib, Sharaz Ramcharran, David Latchaya, Satesh Dwarka, Adrian Sukhwa, Shivnarine Shirkissoon and Narendra Permaul. Andre Percival the former West Indies youth Captain will serve as the player coach with the manager being Muthushanni Permaul.
Port Mourant on the other hand will be led by Yougendra Harrinarine and the other players are Andrew Lyght jr, Ameer Khan, Samuel Kintasammy, Joshua Beharry, Robert More, Gregory Crandon, Wicket Keeper batsman Winston Rose, Raju Singh, Davendra Thakurdeen, Tony McKenzie, Manoj Looknauth, Parsram Tilkuram. Former Guyana Youth player Renrick Batson is the player coach with Godwyn Allicock serving as the manager.
The winning team will receive the Balram Shane Memorial trophy and cash incentives, while the runner up will be adequately rewarded. A number of individual awards will also be up for grabs including the man of the match, best bowler and best batsman among others all compliments of the sponsor and his family who will be on hand to bowl the first ball and present the winners with their accolades. Starting time is 09:30 hrs. Albion are the defending champions.
Meanwhile, the third edition of the Balram Shane Volleyball competition will also be played simultaneously on the hard court of the Albion Community Centre, beginning at 10:00 hrs. Most of the top volleyball teams in Berbice including Guysuco Training Centre/ Port Mourant (GTC/PM) will field two teams, Port Mourant Jaguars, Albion Community Centre, Falcons of East Canje, Rollers of New Amsterdam and Three door strikers of West Berbice and The Skeldon Community Centre are expected to participate.
