Together, Shawndell Park and Shelly ‘The Boom’ Gibson weighs over 450lbs and on Boxing Night, December 26 next, every ounce of them will go after each other in a super heavyweight non title clash in what has been dubbed ‘The battle of the Big Mamas’ when Nation’s Promotions stage 26 rounds of fistic fury at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground on Boxing Day, December 26 next. At least four amateur bouts will also comprise a part of the card and those boxers will be
named soon.
Carl Goulding (jnr) is the man behind the card and yesterday afternoon he hosted a press conference at the Avenue of the Republic office of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers to inform the media of plans and preparations for the fistic encounter.
In all, there will be 4 bouts; the main attraction will be between James Walcott and Derick Richmond in a 12 rounds clash for the local super/middleweight title. Kelsey George will attempt to chalk up his first win since stripping his shirt when he opposes Romeo Norville in a 4 rounds middleweight clash while Cassius Matthews squares off with Kishawn Simon in a 6 rounds jnr/welterweight fight.
Park and Gibson have clashed twice so far and each holds a victory over the other. Admittedly, they were out of the ring for sometime but both have exuded confidence of winning the bout. The former boxer said that she has been engaged in other matters pertaining to her life and took a sabbatical from the sport. She said that she has since refocused her attention to the sport and will give Lindeners their money’s worth. Gibson also promised to give of her best and said that she was informed of this bout about three weeks ago and immediately started training; she practices at the Andrew Lewis Boxing gym, Albouystown under the tutelage of Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels while her opponent trains at the Young Lion’s Boxing Gym in Linden.
Richmond trains out of Berbice and he is bubbling with confidence one fight after sending Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) middleweight champion, Edmond DeClou to the hospital with a broken jaw. He also nurtures winning ambitions but Walcott has made it clear that he is a ‘different kettle of fish.’ “I am no DeClou and there is no way Richmond could beat me much less break my jaw,” Walcott adamantly stated.
Matthews is an old veteran with lots of tricks up his sleeve while Simon is a young enthusiastic fighter with lots of ambition. He also trains in Berbice and has promised to resume his winning ways as of his last fight which he won unanimously.
Meanwhile, Mr. Goulding assures that his group has the boxers’ interest at heart. A former resident of Linden, Mr. Golden has also disclosed that his aim is to develop the sport in his community with a strong focus on Linden boxers.
He said that his dad, a former boxer of the late seventies, had enjoyed a fruitful career back in those days while fighting among such pugilists as Terrence Ali and Walter Smith among others. The younger Goulding further said that the card is his father’s initiative since he wanted to encourage local fighters in the achievement of their goals. He also said that his group intends to stage regular cards of this nature with another planned to collaborate with the annual Town Day activities in the Mining Town. The amateur bouts are still to be finalized but the promoters have bandied such names as Ejad Alli, Joshua Corbin, Monthel Johnson and Akeem Alexander, all exciting boxers that could enhance the card. The promoters have had discussions with Regional Chairman (Upper Demerara), Sharma Solomon and they said that he has given the venture his blessings.
