Fire destroys Comfort Sleep
– Scores jobless; employees, residents suspect arson
Fire believed to be the work of an arsonist completely ravaged the Comfort Sleep Mattress factory last evening, even as firefighters tried to confine the blaze to the lone entity. The fire started around 17:30hrs at the rear of the building.
Comfort Sleep is located in the Eccles Industrial Site.
On October 30, last, another fire destroyed two storage bonds owned by Comfort Sleep. Firefighters managed to save the main building that housed the factory. Yesterday’s blaze destroyed that main building and everything within it.
The October 30 fire was said to have been caused by chemical reactions within containers stored in the bond. Immediately, Fire Chief Marlon Gentle urged business operatives to take more consideration in fire safety for their businesses rather than focusing on heavy security.
However, investigations into the devastating blaze may take a twist on this occasion, since residents in the area related that something seems amiss on this occasion.
Employees and residents said that it appears to be a disgruntled worker who may have contributed to the fire. This was the overwhelming view that was refuted by a few.
The building which was packed with foam and other flammable material had firefighters battling for hours. Fortunately, there were five tenders and a large number of firemen, so adjacent buildings were not destroyed.
The flames were so intense that the concrete walls collapsed. The firemen had to use heavy cutting equipment to gain access to the building since the grilled gates and passageways actually prevented the firemen from reaching closer to carry out their operation.
The residents in the area gathered in shock and surprise; some workers were seen crying and lamenting on what was transpiring in front of their eyes.
One employee, Paul Krishna, said, “I want to let the Guyana Government and the Guyanese people know that this is not natural.” The fire raged for more than two hours and when it was eventually brought under control, all that stood were a few pillars.
