Glasgow Nursery School on the East Bank of Berbice which was refurbished to the tune of $11M, and was occupied in March of this year, was officially commissioned yesterday by Local Government and Regional Development Minister Ganga Persaud at its new location – Lot 778, Glasgow Housing Scheme.
The school which was first established in April 1977 beneath a house at neighbouring Edinburgh Village, and later located in a church along the Glasgow Public Road, is situated in the compound which houses the Glasgow pavilion and playfield.
Minister Persaud in his speech stated that the school lauded the efforts of those who supported the initiative of relocating the school to a permanent site. He told the gathering to acknowledge the efforts that are being made to assist their children in having access to better education and urged them to co-operate with those tasked with the responsibility of educating their kids. He advised them to find the time and participate in school programmes such as class meetings and other extracurricular activities.
Regional Chairman of East Berbice/Corentyne (Region 6), David Armogan, in his remarks, called on parents and residents to take care of the building and highlighted the many problems the region faced in the past, including the shortage of funds to complete the building.
He used the opportunity to warn those in attendance that the region will not take it lightly if the playfield and building are defaced.
“It is your property now. We have fulfilled part of our obligation. We have built it for you; make sure that it is properly taken care of.”
The commissioning ceremony saw cultural performances by students and teachers. The ceremonial cutting of the ribbon and unveiling of the plaque was done by Minister Persaud and Regional Education Officer, Ms. Volaika Jaikishun. Also in attendance were Regional Vice-chairman, Bhupaul Jhagroo and Regional Executive Officer, Paul Ramrattan among other officials.
