Three years ago, Taffin Khan relinquished the Junior National Chess Championship and went after the senior crown held by the then champion, Berbician Kriskal Persaud. The wily player went on to dethrone Persaud and since then has defeated all and sundry to retain the coveted accolade.
Banks DIH Brand Manager (non-alcoholic malts), Clayton McKenzie (R) hands over the sponsorship package to a grateful Chess President, Shiv Nandalall.
Now, Khan will be out to prove that he is indeed a class act when he puts his title on the line when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) stages the 2013 National Senior Chess Championship at the Ocean Spray Hotel, Stanley Place, Kitty, Saturday November 30-Sunday December 8 next. The tournament would be played in a single round robin format and those in the line-up are: Anthony Drayton, Davion Mars and Roberto Neto (junior players) and Wendell Meusa, Errol Tiwari, Glenford Corlette and Neil Khan (seniors).
A few years ago, Meusa had defeated Persaud and won the national title. Fans were eagerly anticipating a showdown between Meusa and Khan but hopes evaporated after the former player relinquished the crown even before making a first defense; Khan had stepped up to the plate and defeated Persaud.
Afterwards, Meusa and Khan had had many epic battles and had shared the spoils but had never clashed at this level. An inevitable collision looms and interesting tournament lies ahead.
Meanwhile, the tournament was officially launched at Banks DIH, Thirst Park yesterday afternoon under the Vita Malt Plus brand and President of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall, journeyed to that location and received the sponsorship package from Banks DIH Brand Manager (non-alcoholic malts), Clayton McKenzie.
Mr. Nandalall expressed deep gratitude to his benefactor and assured him that the gift would indeed assist in the effective running of the tournament. He further said Banks DIH contribution is significant for the growth of chess even as he pointed out that the beverage giants have been rendering similar support ever since the sport has been resuscitated some six years ago.
“Banks DIH is a true friend of the sport and has sponsored tournaments in Berbice, Linden, West Demerara and Georgetown; this time we are doing so under the Vita Malt Plus brand because it has the right ingredients for athletes,” said Mr. McKenzie. He further urged the players to utilize the product as they seek excellence in the championships. Communications Manager of the donating firm, Troy Peters, was also in attendance and said that it is an honour to sponsor championship for another year.
