– Prelim challenge on tonight
The Colts Basketball Club will host the second edition of the Phillip George Legacy competition, dubbed PGII, beginning Friday night on the Burnham Basketball Court and continuing until mid-December at the same venue for Division I and III Clubs.
“The Colts Basketball Club wish to make public, the commemoration of our founder and father’s legacy basketball tournament,” a release said yesterday; “this is a follow up to our first edition; it maintains our commitment to basketball,” it continued.
When he was contacted, President of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA), Michael Singh said that the club is committed to the icon, Phillip George in an effort to continue to revitalise basketball in Georgetown and by extension, Guyana.
“The GABA is still in repair mode that means that we have lots of work to do, and we are doing that work for the sport,” Singh, who came to office this year and immediately piled up grassroots programmes, continued.
This year will feature eight Division I Clubs along with 12 Division III teams, playing in groups before progressing to the semi-final stage. Both divisions have a total of 15 games to determine a champion. December 15 is set as the tournament’s conclusion date.
Meanwhile, two teams, namely Buxton Heat and Knights have challenged Plaisance Guardians and Panthers, for their spots in the tournament among the eight Division I clubs; the preliminary games will be played today on the Burnham Court.
Singh informed that the GABA has put in place two novelty challenges: a Three-Point Shootout and a Skills Challenge to determine the best long-range shooter and fastest player over the court with a basketball, respectively. Singh said that the Shootout will give the winner the opportunity to be named the best three-point shooter in Georgetown.
In addition, both winners of the novelty events will receive $20,000 and a pair of sneakers. The winner of the PGII Division I competition will pocket $100,000 while the second place club gets $50,000. The Division III winner will get $35,000 with $15,000 allotted for the second place club.
Phillip George’s daughter, Philemeena George will donate the MVP Trophy the Division III and son Rashleigh George will donate a trophy to the Most Discipline team in the tournament. There will also be a MVP trophy for the Division I competition.
The sponsors of the competition include: The Original Palm Court, Banks DIH Limited, Agri Parts, The Hallmark Store, Chetsons, Lorenzo Alphonso, WR Rambaran Transport, Imon Communications, The Trophy Stall, Charles Ramson Jr., Starr Party Rentals, Ronald Thorne, Hinds and Statia Financial, Paladin Security, Giftland OfficeMax, Sanjeev Datadin and Demtoco – for cleaning the Burnham Court environs.
George, who was at the time of his death, Head Coach of the Bounty Colts Club, is credited with leading several junior national teams to overseas competitions. In addition, he piloted the careers of notable Guyanese players, Lorenzo Withrite and Andrew Ifill.
George, who was also known as ‘One Foot’, ‘Coach Man’ and most recently ‘Mr. Fundamental’ passed away on December 20, 2011; he was 63 years-old. The renowned local Basketball Coach was one of the most consistent visitors of the Burnham Basketball Court. (Edison Jefford)
