D’Edward and Bath advance to final
D’Edward and Bath both won their latest games in the Inaugural 2013 Norman Singh Memorial Second Division 20-Over Cricket Competition to earn their places in the final.
D’Edward defeated Hopetown United in their semi-final encounter, while Bath upset Cotton Tree Die Hard in a third round match which resulted in them earning a bye through to the final.
In the semi-final played at the D’Edward ground, the home team got the better of Hopetown United by six wickets.
Hopetown United, won the toss and choose to take first strike, had a good start with their opening batsman Derick Cadogan putting on 25 for the first wicket with Ruel Edwards (10) and 60 for the second wicket with Berbice wicketkeeper-batsman Kwesi Mentore to be 85 for 1 in 12 overs at one stage. But after that the D’Edward bowlers led by off spinners, Brian Roopnarine and Devendra Lalsa, slowed up the proceeding and even though Cadogan went on to make 52 (3×4,1 x6) and Mentore 20, Hopetown eventually only managed 116 in 19 overs. Roopnarine took 4 wickets with Lalsa and medium pacer Christian France 2 each.
D’Edward in their turn at the crease had little trouble in reaching 120 for 4 in 18 overs thanks mainly to former Berbice all-rounder Eon Abel who made 37 and Devendra Lalsa 30.
In the third round match played at Bath, the home team upset Cotton Tree Die Hard by 3 runs in a close encounter. The match was reduced to 12 overs-a-side due to the late arrival of the Cotton Tree team.
Bath won the toss and made first use of the pitch to race to 125 for 4 in their 12 overs with Shawn Kadim leading the way with 63 not out (6×6, 3×4), Chaitram Dhanpersaud 31 and Jailall Chandylall 25.
Bowling for Cotton Tree Die Hard, Roshan Gafoor, Pooran Persaud and Nashad Gafoor took one wicket each. They in their turn at the crease made a spirited effort to reach the target and fell three short at 122 for 4 in their 12 overs with Gafoor top scoring with 35 and Persaud 24. Bowling for Bath, Daniel Adjodia and Vinod Ramjattan took two wickets each.
D’Edward and Bath will now meet in the final on Sunday, 1st December 2013 at Bath.
Representatives of the sponsors and the Berbice Cricket Board are expected to be on hand.
