Junior Niles captured the second edition of the Banks DIH Malta Supreme cycle race Sunday last in Berbice. He won the 50 miles race in two hours, eleven minutes and twenty-nine seconds (2:11:29) beating Hamza Eastman in a close finish.
The race started from Banks New Amsterdam head office at Main and New Street New Amsterdam, journeying to the Nand Persaud and Company junction at No35 village on the Corentyne and back to its place of origin for the finish. A total 22 riders started.
The cyclists held together until they reached the Canje Bridge when the first break was made when a six man pack of Niles, Eastman, Neil Reece, Romolo Crawford, Godfrey Pollydore, and Kurt LaRose seized the early advantage. They continued to hold that advantage as the lead among them changed hands.
About half way on the upward journey the lead pack was broken up when Niles, Eastman and Pollydore made dash for it, separating themselves from the others and were never caught. The trio continued to press forward until the end with Niles and the youthful Eastman outsprinting Pollydore to the line.
The other three riders had their own race with Crawford out sprinting his competitors to take fourth spot ahead of LaRose and Reece, while Wasim Hasnoo and Syborne Fernandes rounded up the top eight finishers.
Eastman was the first junior to complete the event, while Crawford was the top Juvenile ahead of Odrell Ross.
Fernandes was the first veteran with Shurland Sewhang second. Marica Dick was the only female to participate and collected the female prize.
The first three members of the FACC to cross the finish line were also awarded, with Reece, Hasnoo and Fernandes taking those honours.
The sprint point prizes were taken by Pollydore with three, Niles and Eastman two each and Reece one.
At the presentation ceremony which followed immediately after the event, the winners were presented with their prizes. Speaking at the event Sales Supervisor Jagnarine ‘Balram’ Persaud thanked the cyclist that participated and for helping to promote the Banks Malta Supreme product which is a healthy drink. He also said that activities like the cycle race is part of Banks DIH way in giving back to the community which has been very helpful and supportive to the company.
Also in attendance were Berbice area Manager Reginald Mathews and Sales Manager Joshua Torrezao. He said gave the company’s commitment of sponsoring the event next year.
Coordinator and coach of the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) Randolph Roberts thanked the company for its continued support over the years. He noted that words cannot express their appreciation to Banks DIH Limited for what they are doing for the community in general including the youths, Sports and education. He urged other business entities to take a leaf out of the Banks DIH book.
The police were also commended for their outstanding job during the race.
The Defending champion was Ray Millington who did not participate due to unforeseen circumstances. (Samuel Whyte)
