Akeem ‘Angel’ Nichols yesterday appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to answer to a robbery charge pressed against him by a Police Sergeant.
The 19-year-old male sex worker refuted the allegation which claimed that on November 23, at Carmichael Street, he was armed with an ‘ice picker’ and robbed Sergeant Naresh Changa of $2,500.
Police Prosecutor Lance Corporal Renetta Bentham relayed to the court that on that date, at about 23:20hrs, Changa was walking along Quamina between Carmichael and Main Streets when he was confronted by ‘Angel’ and two other males who were armed with ‘ice pickers.’
She stated that they threatened to stab Sergeant Changa and then relieved him of his cash. The court heard that the matter was then reported to the Brickdam Police Station and a patrol was sent for the sex worker. ‘Angel’ was subsequently arrested and charged.
However, Attorney at Law Paul Fung-a-Fat who represented the accused stated that his client was approached by an intoxicated Changa who tendered $2,500 in exchange for a sexual encounter with ‘Angel.’
The lawyer, who made an application for bail, told the court that Sergeant Changa did not “enjoy himself” and as a result informed the defendant that he would ensure he is charged for robbery. Fung-a-Fat told the court that his client’s service fees are usually a non-refundable $8000.
Prosecutor Bentham objected to bail on account of the serious nature and prevalence of the offence, the fact that a weapon was used in the commission of the crime, as well as the penalty attached to such an offence. Bentham opined that if granted bail, ‘Angel’ may not return to court to face the charge.
Nevertheless, bail was granted to the tune of $100,000. Nichols is expected to make his next court appearance for statements on December 5.
