Llewellyn Gardner won the Masters division of the Srefidensi Marathon held in neighbouring Suriname on Saturday last. The overall race was won by his fellow Guyanese Lionel D’Andrade in 2:45.19, ahead of another Guyanese, Kelvin Johnson. Alika Morgan placed second in the female race.
Gardner clocked a time of 3 hours 29 seconds in claiming the win. Speaking to Kaieteur Sport, the Guyanese senior distance athlete said, the first 35km of the event was comfortable for him, but he struggled with foot pains in the latter 7km of the race. Gardner attributed the discomfort to not being fully prepared. However, he stated, “I was determined to finish this race.” That he did and to booth claimed the win.
He expressed gratitude to Minister Irfaan Alli, Giftland OfficeMax, Elton’s Business Establishment of Alexander Street and all the others who contributed in financing his journey to Suriname.
This was Gardner’s last race for this year; he noted that he will be focusing on several overseas and a number of local long and middle distance events during the New Year. Gratitude was also extended to his Coach, Leslie Black, who is the President of the Rising Star Track Club, for helping him to make this final event for this year a success.
