Nine indictable charges were yesterday read to 26-year-old Jason De Florimonte following claims made by his ex-employer which alleged that he embezzled over $1.4M and falsified documents.
It is alleged that while under the employ of Beepats Hardware and Haberdashery Store, De Florimonte between the period of October 1 to 31, allegedly embezzled the total sum of $1,404,621.80. The seven counts of Embezzlement by Clerk/Servant charges read to him, alleged that the sum was taken into his possession for/in the name of/on the account of the said company, his former employee.
The two counts of Falsification of Accounts by Office, particularly contend that between August 1 and October 31, De Florimonte, who was a clerk/servant of the store, with intent to defraud, made or concurred in the making of two false invoices on behalf of the company. One invoice purported to show that during the month of August, Treasure Parks had ordered a quantity of goods valued at $25,940 whereas the payable sum was $25,940. The second invoice, however, was made in the sum of $52,046 whereas the payable sum was $370,000.
Representing the accused was Defence Attorney James Bond who told the court that his client resides at 131 Pike Street, Kitty, with his reputed wife and two minor children.
Bond conveyed that during October, whilst on duty, robbers relieved the defendant of $1.2M and in the process he received injuries. Bond explained that clerks like his client are not given weapons, but they transport haversacks which contain money of their employers everywhere.
The lawyer told the court that his client reported the robbery, but his employer believed he had set up the robbery and the police detained him for over 72 hours. He said that his client has an invoice receipt book which has the amount paid and the amount owed, and shows that some of the sum owed is still collectable.
Bond made an application for bail and stated that his client is not a flight risk since he has been reporting to the police and further told the court that he was arrested on one of his report days and charged with these offences.
However, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Vishnu Hunt objected to bail on account of the amount of money which is “in excess of $1.4M.” He said that the matter is still indictable and if granted bail he may not return to court.
The Prosecution said that the accused indeed reported an alleged robbery, but investigations have revealed that to be untrue. He also told the court that advice was sought from the Director of Public Prosecutor’s Chambers.
Magistrate Latchman thereafter refused the clerk bail and the matter will be called again on December 4 for report and fixtures.
