Traffic ranks at the Anna Regina Police Station prosecuted 28 Essequibo drivers who failed to stop their vehicles upon being signaled by the police siren. A campaign began two weeks and remains in effect.
Defaulters were charged for failing to stop at the sound of an approaching siren.
At the time traffic ranks were escorting cyclists who participated in the “Ride for life” race on the Essequibo Coast.
Offenders who were found guilty were subjected to fines ranging from $5000 to $10,000. The majority of those drivers however, claimed that they didn’t hear the police siren, since it was not loud. Two said that they failed to heed the siren because of the congested traffic at the roadside so they could not park.
Magistrate Sunil Scarce reprimanded and discharged some of the drivers who contended that they were not given enough time to park due to the congestion.
There are still some offenders who will have their day in court to challenge the police who have to prove their case against those alleged defaulters.
