Brian Haywood, who allegedly set his stepsister alight during a row over a pair of stolen slippers, will spend the Christmas holidays in prison on an attempted murder charge.
The 30-year-old ‘D’ Field Sophia cobbler was remanded yesterday after he appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court. He is to return to court on January 20, next.
It is alleged that Haywood’s stepsister, Samantha Schwartz, 38, of Section D, South Sophia, was at home last Thursday when the accused asked her about a pair of slippers that was allegedly stolen from his stall.
He reportedly then doused her with a flammable substance before setting her alight. Schwartz sustained burns to her upper body and is still hospitalised.
Haywood allegedly fled the scene but was apprehended on Sunday.
