Speed Boat XI defeated Trophy Stall by 9 wickets and 2 deliveries to spare to capture the ten/10 Winston Murray Memorial softball title when the final was contested yesterday at GNIC ground.
Trophy Stall batted first after the game was reduced to 4 overs due to the fading light and managed 62-1 off their allotted overs. Martin Dutchin top scored with 49 (6×4,2×4). Speed Boat XI responded with 64-1 in 3.4 overs. Wazir Hussain led with 31.
Speed Boat overcame Farm XI by 14 runs in their semi final encounter. Speed Boat XI took first strike and scored 122-8 in 10 overs. R. Persaud made 25 and Greg Singh supported with 22; Rawl Reid claimed 2 wickets for Farm who replied with 108-4 in 10 overs. Lennox Marks scored 49 (8×6) and A. Nash made 22.
Trophy Stall got the better of Omesh XI in the next semi final. Trophy Stall rattled up 135-4 in 10 overs, batting first. Dutchin scored 39, Surajpaul Deosarran 30 and Wasim Haslim 22. Omesh Peters snared 2-20. Omesh XI were restricted to 116-5 in 10 overs in reply. Azaad Azeez made 25 and Travis Drakes 22; D. Persaud took 2-27.
Regal XI went down to Trophy Stall by 2 wickets, Hyde Park lost to Farm XI by 7 wickets, Omesh XI beat Young Warriors of Leguan by 9 wickets and Speed Boat humbled Omesh XI by 8 wickets in the quarter finals.
Hussain was given the man of the match in the final award, while Trophy Stall received a trophy and $60,000, Speed Boat XI grabbed a Trophy and $100,000; each member also collected a medal. Young Warriors were given the prize for being the most discipline team.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony former PNC/R Member of Parliament Aubrey Norton congratulated the winners. He also said that the late Murray represented his place of birth Leguan as a middle order batsman. The competition was played in memory of the late Winston Murray served as a deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Tourism.
