With students of the Government Technical Institute (GTI) achieving a mere 58% pass rate this year, lecturers have been charged to make a difference in enhancing the competencies of those they teach.
This charge was made by Norman McLean, Chairman of GTI Board of Governors at the institution’s graduation ceremony, on Friday last, at the National Cultural Centre.
According to McLean, “If we look at our results this year, we have witnessed a decline in our pass rate, now at 58% from a high of 72%, a reduction of 14%…soon it would be a relevant issue and the real measure would be how competent is the student in this particular area of technical vocational training.”
He emphasized that focus needs to be placed on practical knowledge as well as academic delivery.
McLean stated that the State needs to make investment in Lecturers so that they could produce competent and marketable students. Quoting a line from a recent report coming out of GTI, “We can make a difference”, he said that that should be lecturer’s mantra.
In addition, GTI is moving in a new era where it is collaborating with foreign institutes to enhance the abilities of Lecturers and by extension the students.
“We are facing the problem with competency with Mathematics. This is happening everywhere, not just GTI. We have to focus in the Ministry of Education, in our school system to ensure that people coming out of the system are competent with Mathematics,” he said.
He recalled that about three years ago, GTI had introduced a remedial programme to bring weak entrants up to speed with Mathematics. It appears that the institute would have to reintroduce the programmed, he added.
According to McLean, Guyana is poised for growth in the various sectors including mining, agriculture, construction, manufacturing, and surveying. Even before students graduate they are offered jobs which are available because of major construction on roads and houses.
