Dear Editor,
Please permit me space in your newspaper to highlight the grave exploitation that some vulnerable employees are suffering at the hands of their Employer here in Linden.
The employees who work at a particular Supermarket work from eight a.m to eight p.m Monday to Friday.
But on some Fridays and Saturdays they work until nine or nine thirty in the evenings.
They labor all those hours for a paltry $8 to $9000 per week.
Editor, I would like to know if the national minimum wage does not apply to this particular supermarket.
The proprietor of the establishment even orders her employees to work on some holidays, and if they don’t, they are suspended for three days.
In frustration some employees move on, but others with no alternative remain. There are also reports that employees NIS records are not up to date.
This can be verified.
My understanding is that the minimum wage that was stipulated by Government, and was implemented on July 1st 2013 is across the board and for all and sundry.
It stipulated that no employee should be paid less than $202 per hour or $1, 616 per day and $8,080 per forty hour week, or the sum of of $35,000 per month.
It was also specified that a working day should not exceed forty hours, and a working week five days.
There are penalties for any employer who fails to comply with the aforementioned. The first offence carries a $35,000 fine and$70,000 and one month imprisonment for the second offence.
Now I’m wondering if the employer in this case is unaware of these stipulations, or is just blatantly ignoring them, because of the high rate of employment in Linden.
I certainly hope that the relevant authorities, would look into this matter, and that the employer in question here, comply with the National Minimum wage forthwith, and make the necessary payments, for the employees to the NIS in a timely manner.
Concerned Lindener
