Following a classical display of accurate counter punching, Shaquancy Wright of the Essequibo Boxing Gym (EBG) was adjudged champion in the
55-59lbs class when the curtains came down on the at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym yesterday afternoon. He was so commanding in his bout against Jamie Kellman of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG) that he impressed the fans and eventually the judges who voted unanimously to also give him the best boxer award.
Ten years old Rayon Archer fought in the 75-79lbs class but lost on the inaugural day to Kevon Mullin. He was identified as the youngest boxer in the tournament and received a special prize.
The Wright/ Kellman shindig was truly worth watching as it see-sawed in favour of one boxer and then the other. Maybe the judges were impressed with Wright’s determination where he took his clouts like a man and rebounded to serve up some of his own.
According to the old Guyanese parlance, ‘Kevon Mullin has finally met his meter.’ He faced Isaiah Moore (HEBG) in a 75-79lbs affair and the latter boxer, whose boxing roots came from his father, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore, proved too much for the former. Moore distinguished himself early in the fight with a wicked right uppercut to Mullin’s body and followed up with several right crosses even as Mullin attempted to worm his way in for a slugfest.
The second round was close as both boxers engaged in crowd pleasing exchanges much to the appreciation of the sparse crowd. The third round was another thriller as both boxers exchanged blows at close range. Moore then resorted to his boxing style and had his opponent missing many of his blows, while he (Moore) utilized his reach to full advantage. The ploy worked as the judges voted in his favour.
Odeny Moore (EBG) was also in a devastating mood and needed merely 40 seconds to convince Akeem Moore (YA) that he had no right being in the same ring with him. The two clashed in the 105-109lbs division and the bell had scarcely sounded when Odeny rushed across and unleashed a sustained flurry to Akeem’s head. Referee, Marcelle Daniels instituted the mandatory 8 count and his query of Akeem if he wished to continue was met by a vigorous shake of the head.
In other results, Shaquille Wright (EBG) defeated his gym mate, Delroy Allicock on points to take the 80-84lbs title while Akile Mounter (EBG) emulated Wright’s feat with a majority win, also over his gym mate, Darrel Wrights in the 140-147lbs division. Diwani Lampkin (FYF) and Terrence Adams (HEBG) also entertained the audience with a lively three rounds bout that had fans cheering at its culmination.
President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle was present at the end of the tournament and joined DDL Marketing official, Alexis Langhorne in the distribution of prizes. Referees, judges and coaches also received appreciation medals for their input in making the tournament a success.
