After what could be described as a humble start in Tiger Bay, a small neighbourhood situated in South Cummingsburg, the street football phenomenon has taken roots in almost every community in Georgetown and praises must be give to the Petra Organisation and Banks DIH through its Guinness brand.
Guinness Brand Executive Lee Baptiste (3rd left) hands over the winning trophy to Petra Organisation’s Troy Mendonca in the presence of tournament officials on Friday.
The eagerly anticipated Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ segment which is in its sixth year in Georgetown was launched on Friday in the foyer of the Banks DIH Sports Club and in attendance were Guinness Brand Executive Lee Baptiste, Petra Organisation Co-Director Troy Mendonca, Banks Beer Brand Executive Brian Choo-Hen, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart, Communications Manager Troy Peters and Referees Co-ordinator Wayne Griffith.
Baptiste, who was the first to give remarks, spoke of the Company and by extension Guinness International commitment to the exciting format of the game, adding that it has now evolved into an Annual Caribbean Tournament that involves seven other regional territories including next year’s host Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Grenada.
The Guinness Brand Executive complimented Petra Organisation for being the pioneer of organised street football informing that the Company is indeed happy to be collaborating with the Group to stage another edition of the tournament.
Mendonca in his presentation gave a brief outline of the tournament which he said will involve 32 teams divided into eight groups of four and will be played over nine days at five venues.
The dates that matches will be played according to Mendonca are November 26 and 28 and December 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 17 and 21 with the winners set to receive $500,000, runners-up $300,000, 3rd place $200,000 and 4th place $100,00, while all four teams will collect trophies.
Reigning champions Leopold Street pose with Banks DIH officials after winning the Georgetown competition last year.
Mendonca also stated that all participating teams will receive a minimum of $10,000 which could increase as they progress further into the competition.
Meanwhile, Lee disclosed that Guyana will have to send a player to participate in the Skills Competition and therefore each team is required to submit a player to exhibit skills with the winner to receive a monetary prize and a chance to represent this country at the Caribbean segment.
The defending national champion is Back Circle who have been the country’s sole representative at both Caribbean tournaments to date.
Leopold Street is the reigning Georgetown champions.
