The National Darts Championships got off to a good start last Friday night at the CCWU on Quamina Street, Georgetown, with teams competing for this year’s title. In the end, the All Stars team, captained by the defending national singles champion Sudesh Fitzgerald, trounced the Bank of Guyana team, captained by Melissa Smartt, 7 points to nil in the final.
The Format played was: 10014 players -1 game, 501 doubles -2 games, cricket-2 games-1 player, 501 singles-2 games.
The surprise of the night was the performance of the Bank of Guyana team competing at this level for the first time. Bank of Guyana defeated the favoured Rangers team, captained by Colin France, in the semi-finals by 4 points to 3 points. The teams were locked at 3 points and in the decider 501 games, the Bank’s Leonardo Butcher got the better of Anil Lachman, one of the leading players in the country, beating him in 2 games straight.
In the playoff for third place between the two losing semi-finalists, Rangers got the better of the Family Squad team, 5 points to 2 points.
The Mixed Triples competition was also played, up to the semi-finals round. The results of that round, the best of 3 games (501) are as follows:
1. Melissa Smartt/Marvin Yaw/Adrian Damon defeated Nicholas Seetaram/Francis Correia/Jean DeSouza – 2 nil (upset)
2. Sherwyn Greene/Lallchand Rambharose/Rosetta Hiralall defeated Sudesh Fitzgerald/Andrew Balchand/Hemwattie Amyan – 2 nil (upset)
The only maximum 180 thrown for the night was by Nicholas Seetaram. There is an incentive prize for the player throwing the most 180s throughout the competitions.
Action was to continue yesterday at Malteenoes Sports Club, from 19:00 hours, with the Mixed Triples final and Mixed Doubles, Women Doubles, Men Doubles.
