Safraz Rahim, 26, died before he could access medical attention at the Oscar Joseph Hospital, Charity, Friday night, after the minibus he was driving, BRR7926, slammed into a culvert, uprooting a tree on the eastern half of the Maria’s Delight Public Road, around 10:00pm.
Rahim sustained a deep cut to the back of his head and a blow to his stomach after the minibus crashed into a culvert before ending up in a trench.
Ricardo Fiedtkou, 17, and Gobin Balkiahun, 26, were the other two occupants in the minibus. Fiedtkou sustained a deep cut to his right hand. He remains a patient at the Oscar Joseph Hospital, along with Balkiahun, who has minor cuts about his body. Balkiahun recalled sitting at the back of the bus.
Rahim’s death came 18 days after 61-year-old Bhagwanden Persaud, a newspaper vendor and 74-year-old,Narine Singh, a Hindu Priest formerly of Riverstown, Essequibo Coast, were killed.
Rahim, who received his driver’s licence almost three months ago, was the conductor on his father’s minibus BRR7926, which plys the Anna Regina/Charity Route.
Additionally, earlier on Friday, he had finished cleaning his father’s minibus with the assistance of his friends and was said to be imbibing alcohol at his Perth residence. Later Friday he received a call from another relative informing him to travel to Charity to collect his uncle who had ventured out of the interior.
While Rahim’s relatives were reluctant to speak, reports have suggested that the unmarried conductor was said to be speeding on the Essequibo Public road when he crashed.
And on Wednesday, bail was initially denied to Delney Gonsalves by Magistrate Sunil Scarce. Gonsalves, who was charged with causing the death of 74-year-old, Narine Singh, was slapped with four indictable charges – related to dangerous driving, failing to render assistance, failing to report an accident and fleeing from the scene.
The accident occurred on November 6, last.
Bail was however granted in the sum of $120,000 on charges of failing to report an accident, fleeing the scene and failing to render assistance to Singh.
Gonsalves will return to court on November 17.
His colleague, 21-year-old Sohshanmn Sancharran, of Lot19, Charity, Essequibo Coast was released on $100,000 station bail. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice.
