Dear Editor,
The statement by the Caribbean Financial Action Taskforce (CFATF) on Thursday that Government was told in November 2011 to take certain steps to make Guyana compliant is highly alarming.
Is this regional body saying that Guyana knew for a while and waited until this year to take action.
My research is now telling us that Guyana knew since in early 2000 that the US has placed measures in place to ensure that monies coming from illegal means do not end up financing terrorism.
Surely our Government knew what was coming. All the other countries in the Caribbean, with exception of Dominica, have complied.
The US paid the price and has the right to protect itself. Guyana was warned that it must put systems in place to join the rest of the world in doing its part or face being sidelined from doing business with them.
It is therefore alarming to learn that after knowing this, the Government, under the watch of President Bharrat Jagdeo and Finance Minister, Dr. Ashni Singh, failed to take steps to ensure Guyana is in keeping with requirements.
This year, they attempted to speed the required changes to the law through the National Assembly and we all know what happened.
Now Guyana has been found to be non-compliant. Why must Guyanese and businessman be penalized because our Government failed to do its work?
We know of delays that will start and the fact that other countries have been warned to be careful when doing business with Guyana. We will see delays in overseas payments to suppliers and significant hardships.
Jagdeo and Ashni Singh must answer to the Guyanese people why they took so long. Looking forward to an early response.
A long time PPP supporter
