2nd edition of the DDL/Guyana Boxing Association U-16 Boxing Championship…
Isaiah Moore (HEBG) was in a devastating mood and needed just 20 seconds to dispose of Emmanuel King in their 75-79lbs affair when the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) staged the 2nd edition of the DDL Gatorade/Pepsi/Diamond Mineral Water, U-16 Boxing Championship at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym, Independence Boulevard yesterday morning.
The chimes of the bell were still resonating when Moore rushed over to his opponent’s corner and dealt him several clouts to his temple. He blocked up in an attempt to stave off the onslaught but two hands were just not enough and after he had caught several more wicked blows, the referee swiftly jumped in and called a halt.

Fresh from his recent Bartica sojourn where he copped the best boxer award, Kevon Mullin continued his good showing, forcing the referee to call a premature halt to his 75-79lbs bout against Rayon Archer. Representing the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym (HEBG), Mullin took charge from the first gong with several right crosses. He was also very elusive and had his opponent missing most of his punches. There was a bit of confusion midway into the second round after Mullin connected with several crunching punches. Archer’s handlers decided to throw in the towel but the referee failed to observe the act. So instead of waving the bout off, he directed the hurt boxer into his corner upon the bell.
The laxness of the referee might have been fatal as Mullin resumed the fight in the second round with several wicked punches to his opponent’s head and this time the referee was on cue, waving off the one sided contest in 54 seconds of the second round.
Odeny Moore (EBG) also scored a technical knockout victory over Young Achiever’s (YA) representative, Melchizedek Hinds. The latter boxer managed to hold on for the duration of the first stanza but his body language never suggested permanence. Forty nine seconds into the second round he received a wallop which forced the referee to institute the mandatory eight count and subsequently wave the bout off.
Roy Samuels (HEBG) suffered mixed fortunes, defeating Jonathon Nichols (YA) in the 80-84lbs class but lost on points in a later bout to Shaquille Wright. The later boxer employed a two fisted attack that had the former on the back foot for most of the bout and eventually won a lopsided verdict.
Darrel Ishmael (YA) found the experience of Delroy Allicock too much with the latter pugilist delivering crisp blows, while his opponent lashed out with unorthodox punches that mostly landed in thin air. It was really an introduction to the sport for Ishmael who would have had his first outing in the ring. Activities continue this morning when the champions of the various divisions will be established after several potentially thrilling bouts.
