Sorroya Simmons (15-17 age group) and Daniel Scott (11-12 age group) set new records in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly respectively when competition in the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) National Championships continued on the penultimate day, yesterday at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue.
The 16 year-old Simmons of Dorado Speed Swim Club (DSSC) erased her own record (2:50.31) set on October 27, 2012 with a new standard of 2:44.46.
Her club mate Scott swam excellently in the 100m butterfly to set a new record of 1:03.84, brushing aside the old mark of 1:17.34 that was achieved by Errol van Lange on August 20, 2005.
Over the past three day’s some exciting performances would have been recorded by the local swimmers as they seek to outdo each other in GASA’s year end meet.
Hannibal Gaskin (15-17 boys) won the 100m free and butterfly, Dylan Nurse (13-14 boys) took the 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke, Accalia Khan won the 100m free in the same category.
Amy Grant and Daniel Scott were the winners of the 100m free in the girls and boys 11-12 age group respectively yesterday, while Leon Seaton and Riley Nurse toped the filed for 8 and under boys and girls respectively.
Josiah King and Naomi King were the leading boy and girl in the 9-10 category in the 100m free with King also taking the 50m breaststroke. Sarah King won the 50m breaststroke in the 11-12 age group.
On day two, Leon Seaton, representing Silver Sharks Aquatic Swim Club set new records in the 200m freestyle as well as the 50m backstroke, while Hannibal Gaskin accomplished a similar feat in the 800m freestyle.
Seaton erased the old 200m free mark of 3:17.54 set by Daniel Scott on June 3, 2009, setting a new record of 3:07.91. His new 50m backstroke record of 45.51 erased the 45.64 time that was set by Stephen King on July 11, 2008.
Gaskin was in a no nonsense mood when he accomplished a new record of 9:21.44 in the 800m free, replacing Henk Lowe’s 9:45.95 achieved on October 31, 2009.
On day one, the only competitors that participated in the 1500m freestyle were Godfrey Norton and Andrew Simmons who both represented District 7 (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) in the just concluded Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.
Norton won the marathon event in 24:31.69 followed by Simmons in 26:44.84. The duo also competed in the 800m freestyle. Their performances were highly commended by the GASA Executive.
Today’s final day starts at 12:00hrs with the athletes warming up and competition one hour later, will see the swimmers contesting the 400m Individual Medley; 200m Breaststroke; 50m Butterfly; 100m Backstroke; 200m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle.
