Demerara team to be announced today
By Sean Devers
Former West Indies Captain Ramnaresh ‘Ronnie’ Sarwan fell 10 short of his fifty as Leon Johnson’s X1 reached 164- 4 in reply the 369 all out made by Chris Barnwell’s X1 when the rain-hit Demerara three-day trial match ended at Everest yesterday.
According to President of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Raj Singh, the Demerara team for their opening Four-Day Inter-County game at Enmore against the President’s X1 from Thursday will be announced today.
Resuming on their first day score of 358-9 when play finally resumed at 11:45hrs yesterday after the entire second day was washed out, Barnwell took his overnight 105 to 116 before he was removed by left-arm pacer Andre Stoll in the day’s second over.
Left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun (3-94) and rookie Police pacer Randy Knights (2-38) were the most successful bowlers for Johnson’ X1 who reached 59-3 from 24 overs when a late Lunch was taken at 14:00hrs.
Unlike the second day when it rained consistently all morning, the sun was out in all its glory yesterday.
Shemroy Barrington (3) played around a ball from medium pacer Kelon Carmichael and was LBW at 7-1 on a sluggish track which kept low at times and a heavy outfield which made runs scoring a tedious task.
Test player Ryan Ramdass, looking to resuscitate his career, was now beginning to settle when he pushed at a ball which left him from Barnwell and edged a catch to the Keeper after making 23 to leave the score on 50-2.
West Indies youth batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul stayed around for 71 minutes for his carefully constructed 20 before he played too early and was caught and bowled by Barnwell at 51-3.
After the interval, Robin Bacchus and Sarwan, who started slowly but gained momentum as his innings progressed, took the score to 103 with a 52-run fourth wicket stand before Bacchus (12) fell to leg-spinner Amir Khan.
Sarwan, who looked set for a big score in only his second match since leading Guyana to the CPL final, struck left-arm spinner Denis Legay for an effortless six over extra-cover. He then thumped Khan for another six over long-off before edging a cut to Barnwell at slip at 114-5 as off-spinner Yatesh Dhanpaul got rid of the right-hander who made 40 and also hit three fours in his 63-ball and 68 minute innings.
It was soon 143-6 when Johnson, dropped at slip off the second ball he faced from Dhanpaul, was pushed on the back foot by a quicker delivery from off-spinner Steven Jacobs and lost his off stump after hitting two fours and a six in 21.
Shaquille Williams (11) then fell to Khan at 164-7 leaving Vishal Singh not out on 19 when the match ended. Khan finished with 2-30 and Barnwell 2-12.
In addition to the Demerara versus the President’s X1 match at Enmore, Berbice and Essequibo will also do battle from Thursday at DCC in the first round.
Berbice face the President’s X1 at Everest and Demerara play Essequibo at Wales in the second round from December 5-8, while the final round will be contested from December 12-15 when Demerara come up against Berbice at Enmore and Essequibo oppose the President’s X1 at the Police ground Eve Leary.
