Cricket fans in the Lower/Central Corentyne area will be in for a treat today when, after nearly a year of intense battle involving cricket teams from that area spanning from Courtland to Yakusari in Black Bush, the top two teams that have emerged. Albion Community Centre and Courtland All Stars will battle it out in the final of the Raffik and Sons Construction Services Second Division 20-overs Knock Out Competition at the recently refurbished Chesney Cricket Ground, located at Chesney Back in the Lower Corentyne area where the likes of Narsingh Deonarine, Sudesh and Sunil Dhaniram as well as Fazil and Rafik Sattaur were born and raised, where their cricketing career began.
Albion Community Centre, with this competition only allowing one first division player per team, would not have their big name players. However, former Guyana under-19 batsman Kandasammy Surujnarine will be one of note. The rest is made up of under-15 and some under-17 cricketers, some of whom have represented Berbice and in a few cases Guyana, at the youth level.
Surujnarine’s batting will be backed up by Berbice under-17 batsman Balhand Baldeo and two others who represented Guyana at the under-15 level this year, Adrian Sukhwa and Matthew Hardyal, the very capable Surij Dookna and Berbice under 17 all-rounder Navendra Permaul.
The bowling will be led by offspinners Baldeo and Asif Ali, who played the under-15 inter-county this year for the President’s eleven and Dookna. Left-arm spinner Joshua Harrichand and medium pacer Permaul will also play.
Courtland All Star on the other hand is a team of seasoned all-rounders led by former Berbice pacer Eon Gibson, Troy Matteson, Travis Williams, Keon Sinclair and John Percival who can all lend support to former Berbice under-15 batsman Dwayne Crandon, Michael Cummings and Jamal Cort.
Gibson will spearhead the pace attack with Sinclair, Percival and Cummings while Matheson and Williams have done well with their offspin recently.
The final is scheduled to start at 1p.m. Meanwhile, the third and fourth play off between the two losing semi-finalists, Port Mourant and Fyrish is fixed for 9.00a.m. today at the same venue.
