After a few weeks delay, top doubles players in tennis can now look forward to this year’s Trophy Stall Doubles Tournament which is scheduled to start on Thursday November 28, so says Assistant Tournament Committee Chair of the Guyana Tennis Association (GTA), Keimo Benjamin.
Benjamin said that the tournament was delayed due to clashes with other tournament commitment oversees; now that it was rectified the event is going to be one of the largest in the country.
He received the symbolic trophy from Ms. Devi Sunich on behalf of Trophy Stall, noting that the tournament was always welcome on the GTA calendar of events. It caters to those players who are not comfortable playing singles but prefer doubles, which is more tactical but less demanding.
Benjamin noted too, that the Guyana Tennis Association continues to place emphasis on investment in the sport’s development and urges players to participate and put on their best performance while having fun. He also noted that students should also take the sport of tennis seriously so that they can be well rounded student athletes.
In its fourth successful year of execution, the tournament has contributed to the increase in players for the doubles categories, especially among the Intermediate level players. Ms. Devi Sunich, wife of proprietor Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall, in a statement said that the business has received tremendous support from the tennis fraternity for many years and that this was her company’s way of giving back to the sport to help to create opportunities for greater participation and development.
Quality competition is expected from defending champions in the Men’s Doubles, Jason Andrews/Anthony Downes and their biggest rivals, the Daniel Lopes/Gavin Lewis team. Entrance forms, which have been available through Coaches Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan (642-5672) and Leyland Leacock (660-4011), are due no later than November 25.
