– Rupununi continues female dominance in event
West Coast Berbice, District 5, Marlon Nicholson upset an impressive field yesterday morning in the first event of the Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers’ Union Digicel-sponsored National
Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.
Nicholson, who ran barefooted, attacked the course from the start at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary, to win in 37:27 while Corentyne’s, District 6, Denzil Leitch finished second in 37:52 with Rupununi’s, District 9, Aran Francis (37:59) third.
The top three athletes, who could have been be considered the underdogs in the race, upset those season campaigners, Ornesto Thomas, who was fourth for the East Coast in 38:31 and District 11 North Georgetown’s, Carl McKenzie (38:43), who finished fifth.
The race used the old South American 10km Road Race route. Rupununi continued its dominant performance in the female race when Beverly Ignacio coasted to an easy win in 43:30 more than five minutes ahead of West Coast Berbice’s, Delicia Harper (48.18); Corentyne, Marissa Lawson (58:26) finished third in the female race.
The National Schools’ Championship continues today with the Opening Ceremony at the National Stadium at 9am and the track and field and cycling competitions continuing at the same venue for the next two days.
