Police are investigating yet another murder in Guyana’s interior, following the death of a 42-year-old miner around noon on Monday last.
Dead is Michael Morris, a father of three, of 1544 Cummings Park, Sophia.
Police in a press release said that Morris was involved in an altercation with some other miners at West Park Backdam, Cuyuni, during which one of them is alleged to have dealt him a blow to his head with a piece of wood.
The release added that Morris succumbed to his injury.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News visited the dead man’s home, his sister, Karen Morris, was not aware that her brother had passed away.
According to Morris, early yesterday she was informed by her nephew that her brother had chopped someone at his work site and was apprehended by his colleagues.
Karen Morris said that she was told that her brother had been tied to a tree, awaiting the arrival of the police.
“One time I hear he chopped somebody now I am hearing he dead,” the man’s sister stressed.
She explained that her brother left his home three months ago to go into the interior with one of his neighbours to work.
“He is not a trouble maker and this is not the first time he working in the interior,” Morris’ sister related.
Kaieteur News spoke with Michael Morris’ neighbour, whom he left to go into the interior with.
According to the neighbour, who declined to give his name, Michael Morris left his camp a few days ago and
started working with another man.
“I get malaria, so I come out Friday. This (yesterday) morning, my cook radio and tell me that Morris and a man from the other camp had some argument and he (Morris) chop the man on his hand. I didn’t hear back anything. Now I know Morris dead,” the neighbour said.
Efforts are being made to have the body brought out to Bartica.
