An East Coast Demerara family that was robbed on Saturday evening has confirmed that the crashed car appearing on the front page of Kaieteur News’ Monday issue is the same vehicle that had transported bandits to its Foulis community.
The navy blue Toyota AT 212 motorcar, PPP 215, crashed into a building in the vicinity of Leopold Street in Georgetown on Sunday night after its occupants opened fire on ranks who were responding to information that tied them to a robbery in Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara that evening.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the occupants identified as 25-year-old Silk Mc Lean, called Arthur Nimrod of Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara was shot while his alleged accomplices, nicknamed ‘Mark’ and ‘Fish’ escaped after the vehicle crashed. Mc Lean is currently nursing gunshot wounds under police guard at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Meanwhile, the Foulis family is still recovering from the first time robbery of its Beer Garden & Grocery which saw the gunmen carting away close to $100,000 in cash and valuables.
Recounting the ordeal, proprietor of the shop Zamina Mangru, said that around 20:00 hours on Saturday, four men exited a blue motorcar in the vicinity of her Lot 518 14th Street, Foulis property.
She said that two of the men, who appeared to be police dressed in plain clothes, proceeded to approach the entrance of her property while the other two headed in the direction of a nearby house.
“They hold their gun just like if they were plainclothes policemen. They had on police boots,” Mangru informed. Asked if they were wearing masks, Mangru replied in the negative.
She said that at the time, she was stationed behind the counter of the shop while her husband and other patrons were dwelling in the social area of the beer garden.
The businesswoman recounted that one of the men had remained behind at the entrance of the property while the other trudged forward, gun in hand.
“He put the gun straight up to me and said ‘Pass all the money you got’”, Mangru explained. She said that after replying that she “had no money”, the gunman reportedly uttered a long list of expletives before threatening to shoot her.
She said that she then proceeded to reach into her cash drawer in order to gather the cash before handing it over when the armed man ordered that she “leave the money” and hand over the entire drawer instead.
After collecting the drawer, she said that the man placed it onto one of the pool tables in her shop and ordered that everyone “empty their pockets and put it in the drawer.”
An unsuspecting customer subsequently ended up in the mishap when he reportedly drove up just as the gunmen were exiting the property.
According to Mangru, the men cornered the customer and ordered that he hand over his wallet, car keys and cellular phone before getting into the car and taking off.
The other two men were reportedly left behind.
Mangru said that mere seconds after the men took off, members of the Enmore Policing Group who were monitoring a nearby barbeque, happened to pass by the area. She said that at this point, after alerting the policing group of the happenings, residents urged that the group chase after the criminals.
Much to their dismay, however, the residents were told to report the matter to the nearest police station. According to Mangru, this response was given even as the getaway car was still in sight.
The businesswoman said that while disappointed with the reaction of the Enmore Policing Group, residents were appreciative of the Policing Group of Foulis which later showed up and acted upon reports that the other two men were still in the area.
The men made good their escape on foot after gunshots were fired into the air by the Policing Group.
According to Mangru, the getaway car reportedly “came back and circled the area searching for the other two.”
The matter was reported to both the Vigilance and Enmore Police Stations and investigations are ongoing.
