CMRC November 24 Race Meet…King rates Guyana’s chances as excellent in defence of home turf
Understanding the thoroughness and careful attention that are required to host an event the magnitude of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship, host the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) held a Cocktail for sponsors and competitors on Monday evening, at the club’s Headquarters on Albert Street.

During the ceremony, members of the media were afforded the opportunity to interact and even interview some of the competitors about their preparations, their chances of doing well and the whole thought of Guyana defending home turf on Sunday against the anticipated large foreign invasion.
Among those who chatted with the media was former Group 4 champion Andrew King and he expressed confidence that Guyana will be able to hold off the visiting teams since the local team is a strong one and the cars and bikes are in superb condition.
Asked about his own preparations, King said that despite the speculations he has not done much adjustments to his Mazda RX7, but the few modification that were done could give him a little more speed.
“We haven’t done much on the car since it last raced, but the few changes that we’ve made I expect a few more HP to be generated.”
King, who referred to the South Dakota Circuit as ‘the Office’ said he was expecting to get in some valuable seat time ahead of Saturday’s qualifying session, adding that it is crucial for him to secure a good spot on the grid, especially with the likes of Kevin Jeffrey, Mark Vieira and Jamaica’s Doug Gore confirmed in the line-up.
He said he felt that the turnout of fans will be large and is therefore urging spectators to get to the Circuit early and get the best vantage point to witness what is anticipated to be an exciting and enthralling day of speed in every category.
A savvy veteran, who has been in the sport for over two decades, is still regarded as a tough competitor and very difficult to keep off the podium and someone who knows ‘the Office’ very well.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism which has been on board for the past three years will once again partner the GMR&SC in an event that has evolved into a major sport tourism attraction.
GT&T, Seaboard Marine, Valvoline, Banks Beer and King’s Jewellery World, Fly Jamaica, Rent-A-Tent and American Stores are among the sponsors for this event.
