-11-year-old hospitalized
Public spirited citizens arrested a drunken driver yesterday after he had struck down three Stella Maris pupils in the vicinity of a popular bar in Station Street, Kitty.
At the time of the incident the three 11-year-old students, Ebitoyo Pilgrim, Shamar Lesprance and Kesi Carter were with one of their teachers.
The teacher recalled some of the disturbing details of the incident. She said, “The children and I had left school and were walking along Station Street. As we were approaching Seeta’s Bar, this guy who was clearly under the influence just flew out in his car. Everybody was like looking at him by that time and then he just drove so fast out of the parking space by the bar that he hit the children. Pilgrim got caught under the vehicle. It all happened so fast. It was a frightening experience.”
An enraged eyewitness said, “It is really sad when things like these happen. Every other day is an accident. We need to clamp down on this because it only getting worse. What is really being done about drunk driving? What the police really doing? We need to see improvement in this place. He could have killed those children with how he was driving.”
The intoxicated driver was apprehended by concerned onlookers and turned over to the police who arrived at the scene shortly after.
The teacher accompanied the students the Georgetown Hospital.
Lesprance and Carter suffered minor injuries to their hands and knees. Pilgrim remains a patient at the Hospital with a puncture wound to the neck.
