Six other players qualify
Former National Junior Chess Champion Anthony Drayton shrugged aside the loss of his National Junior Chess crown to Haifeng Su last month and registered 6 points to capture the top spot when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) staged the 2013 National Senior Chess Qualifiers at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue Sunday
November 17 last.
The former junior chess king registered a major upset when he defeated former senior champion Wendell Meusa and though both players ended the tournament on 6 points apiece, it was Drayton who benefited from the tie break system to seal off the top spot.
The five other players to qualify for a shot at Khan’s title are junior players Davion Mars and Roberto Neto and senior players Errol Tiwari, Glenford Corlette and Neil Khan. These players will compete for Khan’s title later this month.
Meanwhile, Khan observed the action from the sidelines and commended the standard of play. Shortly after the competition had ended he confided in President of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall that he was impressed with the high quality exhibited by the players. Nevertheless, the chess king said that though he envisages a stiff battle, he is confident of retaining the title.
The other points standings read, Davion Mars (4 ½) and Roberto Neto, Errol Tiwari, Glenford Corlette and Neil Khan (4 each).
Shortly after the tournament had concluded, CCI Human Resources Manager Jimmy Lorrimer visited the venue and assisted in the distribution of prizes. The CCI executive congratulated all of the players and urged them to continue training hard for the imminent championships. He also recommitted his company’s support to chess while noting the presence of so many young players attempting to win the accolade. For his efforts, Drayton received $15,000 and enters the senior championships with a distinct psychological advantage.
