Two men were killed and a third injured after a car slammed into them yesterday at Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer Zorg, West Coast Demerara.
Dead are Hasib Bulla, 52, of Lot 150 East Meten-Meer Zorg and Juman Ally, 56, of Lot 29 De Willem, WCD. The injured was identified as 55-year-old Latchman Chand, also of Meten-Meer Zorg.
Up to press time Chand was undergoing surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police in a statement said that Bulla and Ally were standing on the roadway in conversation with Chand at around 06:00 hrs when the driver lost control of his vehicle and struck them.
The driver, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was detained at the Leonora Police Station.
Kaieteur News was told that Bulla, who works at the estate, was waiting at the junction of Tarla Street for an Estate truck and Alley, who is a mini bus conductor, was waiting to be picked up by the bus driver, when they met Chand and got involved in a conversation.
It is believed that the driver of the motor vehicle, who was heading to Parika, fell asleep and crashed into the men. The driver reportedly told persons who were at the scene that he had a “long night.”
“Chand was on his bike and Bulla and Juman were talking to him. Juman had just bought a pack of cigarettes when this car came out of nowhere and hit them.
Juman and Bulla pitched about 200 feet away from the scene. The car hit Chand and he remained at the point of impact,” an eyewitness said.
Bulla’s wife, Nafeeza Ali told this newspaper that her husband left home around 05:55 hrs for work, and promised that he would return early,
“He eat and he carry snacks to eat later, before he left the house he tell me that he will come home around 11:00am,” Ali said, adding that her husband was the sole provider for the home.
