Junior boxer, Kevon Mullin emulates the feat
They say that perseverance is the key to success and this theory could not have been more forcefully exemplified than when Republican Elite pugilist, Stephan Nedd, punched his way to a unanimous verdict and the bantamweight title when the finals of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Champion of Champions boxing tournament concluded at the Bartica Community Centre Ground Saturday evening last. Nedd’s performance also tipped the scales in his favour and he was eventually awarded the best boxer in the elite category.
Kevon Mullin added a majority decision to his earlier victory over Delroy Allicock in the 75-79lbs category on the opening night and was duly elected the best junior boxer after clinching championship honours in his division.
The night’s activity was somewhat marred by several walk over decisions after Tariq Looknauth (BBG) failed to show up for his 90-94lbs fight against his gym mate, Zeggie Edwards and Akeem Christian emulated the default against Republican, Jason Barker. The fans also vociferously denounced the 2-1 verdict awarded to GDF female middleweight boxer, Dwon Thompson against her Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) counterpart, Theresha London, as they felt the latter boxer had done more than enough to earn the nod. After the decision was announced, London burst into tears and stormed out of the ring without bothering to receive her runner up prize. Word out of the GBA executive seems to suggest that disciplinary action will be taken against London and her coach, Joseph Murray, who was also accused of verbally abusing the officials.
The battle for supremacy between Police representative, Imran Khan and his Harpy Eagle’s Boxing Gym (HEBG) counterpart, Stefan Gouveia continued and the former boxer came out victorious after a hard fought and entertaining bout. GDF welterweight gym mates, Eon Bancroft and Ron Smith clashed once again, merely weeks after the latter boxer had surrendered a points decision to the former and this time Smith enjoyed sweet revenge when he punched his way to a convincing majority verdict over his nemesis, while Bert Braithwaite (GDF) needed just 1:44secs of the second round to dispose of Bartica Boxing Gym (BBG) representative, Devon Obermuller to capture the jnr/welterweight crown.
In the 70-74lbs division of the junior category, Delroy Allicock (EBG) rushed out at Kemo Abrams (BBG) and dealt him several clouts, closing him off at 1:05secs of the first stanza to take that title. Stevie Doprado then punched his way to a points verdict over his gym mate Shawn DeSouza to take the 110-114 title, while female HEBG representative, Keasyann Mullin was gifted a walk over in the female 110-114 division.
Meanwhile, the organizers have indicated a desire to upkeep the programme since they strongly believe that Bartica could produce classy pugilists. One of the organizers has indicated that plans are in train to construct a proper gym. He said that HE is currently in discussions with some members of the business community towards this venture and will make such disclosures at the appropriate time.
