A father of four was killed and his friend injured at around 17:30 hrs on Saturday, after they were struck by an allegedly speeding and drunk driver on the Public Road at No. 19 Village, Corentyne.
Dead is 44-year-old Guysuco employee Bimchan Ramphal, of Lot 63 NO. 19 village, East Coast Corentyne Berbice.
His 48-year-old friend escaped with minor injuries. The 22-year-old driver was admitted under police guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Police said that tests revealed that he had consumed alcohol above the legal limit.
Kaieteur News understands that Rampaul and his friend were standing on the road at around 18:00 hrs on Saturday when a driver, who was speeding, lost control and struck them. Ramphal bore the brunt of the impact and was reportedly hurled over a trench and ended up in a yard. He died on the spot.
Ramphal is survived by his wife, Hemwatie Kaiso, eight siblings and four children, aged 17, 16, 13 and 10.
