There was drama outside the Georgetown Prison at around 21:00 hrs last night, after police exchanged gunfire with suspected bandits in a car, wounding one man and causing his alleged accomplices to flee after crashing.
The wounded suspect, identified as Silk Mc Lean, 25, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with gunshot wounds to the head, side and leg.
Police sources told Kaieteur News that ranks had received information that bandits in a dark coloured car had robbed four people, including a police rank, at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara earlier in the evening.
A vehicle fitting the description of the getaway car was subsequently seen traversing Camp Street, near the prison. Police ranks were in the process of trailing the vehicle when the occupants opened fire. The ranks returned fire, wounding Mc Clean. The occupants then headed towards George and Leopold Streets, where they crashed into a building. Some of the occupants then exited the vehicle and reportedly fled into the same building, while Mc Lean reportedly caught a taxi which took him to the GPHC. At press time, police were still scouring the area for the suspects.
The incident occurred at the same time that Joint Services ranks were engaged in a stand-off with inmates who had staged a protest in the prisons.
